Artist Statement:
A modern interpretation of “Neo Plasticism” or artistic licence taken too far? MODERNdrian delivers bold colours inspired by the Dutch painter and theoretician Piet Mondrian.
The use of plastic bottle tops started as a response to the realisation that the local bottle bank sent this brightly coloured waste product to landfill. The artist in me was excited by the properties, strength & versatility of the resource but as a citizen of the world, I was horrified at what we had created and that we still perceive plastic to be disposable.
As much as I desired to make boxes and straight lines of primary colours from modern day plastic waste, the material was unyielding, much like the perpetual flow of plastic into our oceans, waterways and landfill.
The impact of plastic on our environment is truly heart breaking. One of the most concerning issues of modern times and a resource lost.
