Hadley’s Art Prize Residency

It was a long shot to have my World of Wearable Art (WOW) entry “The Music Within’ sent directly from New Zealand to Hobart and it wasn’t without a few hiccups but there she was in all her boxes, in perfect condition on her own little pallet, delivered to the car no less.
The fact that she alone fills the car is not lost on me and getting her back to Qld maybe a head scratching exercise for another time. For now she is here and I’m so excited to have her in my show.
A big shout out to WOW for the repacking and Mainfreight for helping it along the way. The biggest thank you to Gary Mainfreight Tassie/aka SeaRoad for helping with the final leg from Melbourne 50kg, 5 boxes truly WOW.
Wait till opening night for this one.
Studio WIP
Following two unsuccessful trips to Bunnings, trying every hook, clamp and hanging system they have in the place, I gave up and threw the white rope, I brought from home, over the exposed beams and called it done.
Thanks to All About Bunting – a Sunny Coast local business for saving rope for me – who knew they’d end up on a wall in Tasmania.
The challenge and part of the joy of old buildings, especially this one, is that nothing is square and absolutely nothing is of a standard size. I was so happy when told I could pin straight into the plasterboard walls, just don’t touch the convict era stone – check – I need more pins
Artwork update
* The remaining bottle top lily pads have migrated to the WoolStore
* Laid out the tea art miniatures ready for hanging.
* Lots of moving around and rearranging
* Building paper mâché mannequin for exhibition
* Ordered a giant mirror dome for a new piece I have planned
* Can tab Jellyfish being constructed only mentally at this stage
* 30 completed fabric tiles on the wall
Visitors and Studio life
Met my studio neighbour Richard (a painter). Works consistently and keeps mostly to himself, nice to know others are around.
Visited Catherine Cooper (studio just down the hall) who I met last year during my Hadleys Art Prize visit. Prepping for a residency next week but still had time to share a story or two today. I couldn’t resist her paint pallets – a living history of her work.
Skye from Hadley’s dropped by the studio to see how I was settling in and if I needed anything. Was nice to touch base but for some reason I started to wonder what previous artists have done with this space. Think I’m definitely the first to carpet it…..Queenslander LOL
Exhibition Prep
* Long focusing phone call with my friend & event producer Liz Waters – so many fun things to be doing and studio time
* Latest gallery floorpan with 21 proposed artworks is on the studio wall and I have ticked off only 5 of the 21 items on the list…..scary
* Michelle, my friend, travel buddy and graphic designer is working in the background on my website, flyers, window decals & banners
* We had great fun tonight creating the A6 postcard (knowing now that the hero piece was actually arrived)
* I’d like to have flyers for an exhibition opening this Friday
