Artist Statement:

A sculptural tribute to members past and present, of the Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) and its enduring spirit of community and resourcefulness.

The artistic process draws on Peters rich timber heritage, hailing from a family of champion axemen and inspired by Peters’ Great-Grandmother Annie Tilney. The piece features two colossal knitting needles hand-crafted from a 25-metre salvaged ironbark tree, symbolising strength and adaptability.

Adorning the needles is the beginnings of a giant’s scarf, salvaged & knitted by De and accompanied by a massive ball of wool. Made from over three kilometres of retired fishing nets, craypot lines, and ropes collected with the support of the Mooloolaba trawlers and fishing community. Each stitch is a reminder of the life these materials once held, reflecting a cycle of utility, abandonment and renewal.

Through this transformation of everyday tools into monumental art, BIG captures the QCWA’s creative resilience, honouring heritage and the beauty found in repurposing. The sculpture celebrates the strength that emerges when individuals come together, linking past and present in a shared legacy of resourcefulness and community.
